The debate of whether home schooled children should or should not be allowed to participate in public school athletic programs is very controversial all across America. There are some who believe that the children should be allowed to participate in sports and others who believe that this would be unfair. The people who believe that the home schooled children should be allowed to participate go on the fact stated by Isaac Sommers, “. . . the parents of home-schoolers pay property taxes that fund public schools” (Sommers). These children should be allowed to participate in public school sports since the parents do in fact pay taxes that help fund the particular school. Instead these children are left being taught by their parents who may also be working another job along with teaching his or her child. William C. Bosher Jr. states that, “Students who must comply with attendance requirements, maintain grade-point averages and meet behavior expectations would compete for team slots with students who cannot be held to the same rules.” This means that home schooled children are often granted more leeway compared to students who attend public schools. Although it would be hard to do so, home schooled children’s school work should constantly be tracked to make sure that they are keeping up with their work. In recent studies it is shown that homeschooled children test higher compared to public school children, “considering that home school students who participated in a number of large studies have scored an average of 30 points higher on national standardized achievement tests than their public school peers, we can easily create a trustworthy system that provides equal opportunity to each students. . .” (Sommers). Also, every week a report of his or her grades should be sent to the public school in which the child is participating in sports to make sure that he or she is balancing school and sports
