Should Schools Have Later Start Times?
It is the beginning of the school day and eyes are drooping because of the lack of sleep. The National Sleep Foundation says, “The roots of the problem include poor teen sleep habits that do not allow for enough hours of quality sleep... and a clash between societal demands, such as early school start times” (1). Could this problem be solved already if school start times were later? A regular school start time is around 8:00 A.M. Many scientists say this is too early for a child/teen to go to school, let alone the earlier times that adolescents wake up. Kids would be less reluctant to do work, better grades would be received, and kids might work harder during physical education. According to EducationDegree.com, they continue the point, “Studies have proven that when students get more sleep, their test scores actually go up” (1). This quote proves later start times would help a student’s mind because they would be more focused on their work and be less diverted when completing important papers. Sports and extracurricular activities also plays a factor in a kid’s career; they need to be energized and awake if they want to play proficiently. According to EducationDegree.com, they say, “Think about it, if you get more sleep you won 't be as drowsy, clumsy, and probably have better reflexes…” (1). This explanation proves that more sleep during the night will help you stay focused because sleep increases your mental stability. Also according to EducationDegree.com, they continue the point, “Studies have proven that when students get more sleep, their test scores actually go up” (1). This proves later start times would help a student’s mind because he/she would be more focused on their work and be less distracted when completing important work.
