Should We Ban Animal Testing Persuasive Essay

Animal testing has been part of science and education as far back as the 2th century BCE. They have been subjects to experiments that were revolutionary to science, done out of curiosity, and/or even help to create life-saving treatments. Yet those who are always at the disadvantage were the animals themselves. In 1655, physiologist Edmund O’Meara was recorded expressing his opposition against animal testing, and in 1822, the British parliament implemented the first animal protection law. It is now currently 2017, so should we ban animal experimenting altogether?

With the revolutionary medical advancement of stem cells, we can say animal testing may come to its end. These stem cells can differentiate to become useful and important cells. This would mean they can also differentiate into the specific cells needed for experiments. Animals no longer have to be subject to experimentation because stem cells would replace them. But like all this new, the long term effects are currently unknown, and that is what makes people scared and opposed to new ideas. Nevertheless, take it from this mindset. In order to advance, we need to try something new. Like in 2015 and before, Tesla was seen as the laughing stock of the car industry, as an idealistic company that is bound to die in a few months. Yet with the release of their Model 3, everybody took a different stance. Those who were opposed to it before felt threatened, while some who gave up on electric cars tried again. With the rise of stem cells, it is inevitable that many would view this the same way, and try to push it down, but if we give it time, it will soon make banning animal testing a logical decision.

Even so, the truth about stem cells is that they are retrieved from embryos of live beings. There are many arguments stating that this violates the sanctity of life and can be classified as murder. Making it no different to animal
