Should Women Be Allowed The Right to An Abortion? Somewhere around the country you will certainly find signs with angrily scrawled messages that read “slut”, “baby killer”, and “whore”. These crude and cruel signs will be at protests outside of planned parenthoods and protests that are heavily against abortion. Abortion is one of the most fiercely debated topics in America. The current law of the land makes abortion legal, even though there are many restrictions to make getting an abortion more difficult for women to receive, this is due in part to the landmark case, Roe vs. Wade. Women have many reasons for wanting or needing an abortion. Financial issues are one of the top concerns of women who receive abortions. 42% of women who get an abortion will be below the poverty level. A Sep. 2013 Southern Medical Journal peer-reviewed study comparing the mental health of women who received abortions, to women denied abortions, found that women who were denied abortions "felt more regret and anger" and "less relief and happiness" than women who had abortions. The same study also found that 95% of women who received abortions "felt it was the right decision". This shows that women are not regretting their decisions and that women who are able to receive an abortion have better mental health than those denied one. Helen Zell, a writer for the Chicago Tribune, states that “Extensive research has shown that children born from unintended pregnancies are statistically more likely to experience poor mental and physical health during childhood, as well as to have lower levels of educational achievement and more behavioral challenges.” This clearly shows that denying women abortions only causes more stress and pain for the future child and mother. There are so many more reasons that could be found to support abortion, and the positive effects that legalizing it
