Introduction “When we consider that women are treated as property, it is degrading to women that we should treat our children as property to be disposed of as we see fit.” This quote comes from the one of the greatest feminists in history, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The quote also encapsulates the ongoing debate about whether or not a women has a right to her own body, or whether or not an unborn child has a right to a protected life. Abortion was made legal by the Supreme Court Ruling in the case Roe v. Wade in 1973 (LLI). Many support this decision as it has made it much safer for women to end a pregnancy before it has come to full term. Those that are pro-choice, believe that abortion is justified because it is a women’s a right to govern her own body. On this point they are correct. A women’s body is no one’s but her own, and she should be free to make her own body. However, the life inside the mother is not hers. The body of any woman is no one’s but her own, yet the life growing inside of that body is not hers. It is a separate body, with it’s own rights. This is where the pro-choice and and pro-life movements disagree on the most: when does life truly begin. Those that are pro-choice are commonly of the opinion that the beginning of life is not just when life physically begins, but when a person actually becomes a person. When that newly formed body transforms from just a growing organism to an actual person. Some believe that a person is not truly alive until they have been born and taken their first breath. It is not just a physical debate, but a metaphysical one as well. (Sheldons). However, those that are pro-life do maintain that life starts at conception, and continues to grow from there.
