Should what you say on social media be grounds for getting fired from work or expelled from school? This question is a tough one to debate because many of us would say ‘’no because of freedom of speech’’. When does freedom of speech cross the line? I say when it causes harm or undue stress on a person or company. So, the answer to the above question is ‘’yes’’. A person should be fired for posting negative comments on social media especially about the person’s employer. A person is a representative for their place of employment. What a person says or show on social media directly or indirectly reflects his or her place of employment. Several years ago, an employee was terminated for posting negative comments about the employee’s boss. The case was presented before the National Labor Relations Board, which deals mostly with union employees, and not ‘’at will’’ employees. A person should have the right of freedom of speech but not at the expense of others. A company should not have to pay someone a salary then have that same employee criticize the company. The company owes no loyalty to the employee basically he or she was hired.

The flip side of this debate would be is companies and bosses should not peruse through an employee’s social media page. Something is best left unseen and unsaid. A company should automatically trust and believe an employee unless that employee demonstrates behaviors that warns an investigation into. Really, how can a boss really make a
