Future Forewarnings Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, and Wall - E, directed by Andrew Stanton, are futuristic works within an imperfect society with an over reliance on technology. Both works are warnings to their readers about perceived viewpoints on the future. Fahrenheit 451 and Wall - E both talk about oppression by a large government in completely different ways. These works also express lack of human human communication. Also, they both convey a warning that over reliance on technology can be a problem. Everyone talks about a great, big, beautiful, tomorrow but how do we really know it is shining at the end of every day? An article mentions “movies consistently address the possibilities of humans falling prey to our own inventions”(Adrian Chamberlain). One of the movies mentioned in this article is Wall-E which uses technology to provide their perceived paradise and communication. This technology provides everything they need. When the captain is overthrown by his autopilot in Wall- E the captain yells “Auto! Auto! Mutiny! Mutiny! Stupid wheel”(Wall-E)! This wheel took over the ship, therefore turning its back on the capitan. This technology overthrew humans, in a second, proving that technology is a dangerous thing to rely on exclusively. Just like in Fahrenheit 451 they use firemen to destroy individual’s identity, ideas and thoughts. They use a mechanical hound to enforce the law. Montag is hiding books so the mechanical hound always has it out for him. He describes the hound as “the mechanical hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live”(24). The mechanical hound symbolizes the manipulation of technology, by not helping the firemen. Instead, the hound participates in the government oppression. The hound serves as a warning using symbolism where Wall-E shows it directly. The Mechanical hound follows the government where the autopilot tries to overthrow it.
