True love is something that is very hard to explain, but HowStuffWorks says, “Dr. Neder defines true love as caring about the health, well-being and happiness of another person to a greater degree than your own health, well-being and happiness” (HowStuffWorks). Which is the closest thing to true love people can agree on. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is about a pair of star crossed lovers who fall in love and get married in matter of a week. They then both end up killing themselves because of their love towards each other. Romeo and Juliet’s love towards each other is said to be true love but is it actually infatuation instead of love. Friar Lawrence makes this clear by stating, “Is Rosaline, whom thou didst love so dear, so soon forsaken? Young men’s love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes”(Act 2, Scene 3, pg 3). Friar Lawrence makes it clear that Romeo, like many young men, only look for the beauty they see with their eyes and not the beauty they see with their hearts. Romeo says many times and even cries about how he loves Rosaline but quickly forgets about Rosaline after he sees Juliet and then wants to marry Juliet the night he meets her. Friar Lawrence helps make it clear that Romeo is not truly in love with Juliet for who she is but what Romeo sees in her whether Romeo is aware of this or not. Romeo changes his mind about him loving Rosaline as soon he sees Juliet and then decides he loves Juliet instead. Romeo and Juliet are in “love” with each other because of how they look through their eyes and not with their hearts. During the prologue for Act 2 the chorus says, “Now Romeo is beloved and loves again, Alike bewitched by the charm of looks”(Act 2, Prologue). This shows that Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other because of the way they see each other on the outside and not what is on the inside.
