In Mark chapter 2, I was stuck by Jesus’ concern for both the physical and spiritual needs of the people. When Jesus healed the paralyzed man in Mark 2, he first told the man, “Son your sins are forgiven.” Later in the passage he commanded the man to “get up, take [his] mat and go home.” The order Jesus addresses this man’s problems shows the severity of each. Since Jesus addressed the problem of the man’s sin first, readers can understand that from Jesus’ eternal perspective, the problem of the man’s sins outweighed the problem of the man’s disability.
