One common problem that people faces today is sleep deprivation. With the increasing demands that our lives bring us today, sleeping has become quite difficult. Lack of sleep also known as sleep deprivation is when someone does not get enough sleep to maintain a healthy lifestyle. What this means, is that an individual is getting around 4-6 hours of sleep which has a lot of negative impacts on the individual’s mind, body and soul. Both university students and teachers suffer from sleep deprivation for many reasons. Both students and teachers are working very hard to achieve great performance in universities. Students study for different kind of exams and do a lot of homework as well, while teachers are doing their best to help weak performance …show more content…

In universities, students are required to do homework for different subjects and maintain high marks in quizzes and exams, while teachers are obligated to give extra time to teach students with weak performance or to mark dozens of papers. Therefore, both are expected to suffer from sleep deprivation. Firstly, students tend to follow bad habits that makes them suffer from sleep deprivation as these bad habits lead them to go to bed late. According to Hershner and Chervin (2014), the reason why students suffer from sleep deprivation is because they do not get enough sleep, as they go to bed late and wake up early. This clearly indicate, that students are following bad habits that result in them sleeping less; which leads to sleep deprivation. For instance, in universities students are given a lot of tasks which could be homework, research and more. These tasks have a specific date that they should be submitted before. This means, that students who usually procrastinate these tasks, find themselves staying up late at night to finish these tasks before the due date. Another cause that could cause sleep deprivation is stress. According Han, Kim and Shim (2012), The more stressed someone is the more he suffers from lack of sleep. These causes lead to some deadly diseases and an effect on the normality of the cognitive function. However, that does not mean you cannot fix sleep deprivation, as reducing bad habits and relieving stress are considered solutions that can help teachers and students with sleep deprivation. In addition, what is clear is that many people are sleep deprived in these days because of their job’s demands; however, thinking that sacrificing sleep for work to improve an individual’s performance is wrong, as improving your health by sleeping well will result in a better life style and a better performance in your job.
