1) Summarize the 5 strategies that are used in this course: (discussion, self-directed learning, small group work, project, and collaborative learning)

1. Discussion
Discussions are an interactive, participatory learning strategy. Participants are able to analyze other’s thoughts and opinions, and open their minds. There are two types of discussions, asynchronous and synchronous.

2. Self-Directed Learning
Also known as self-paced, independent, or individualized learning. In this learning strategy, the learner is ultimately responsible for what they learn. Students who use this strategy are proactive learners, and are more likely to retain and make use of the information they learn.

Project
There are many types of projects such as simulations, roleplaying, case studies, problem solving exercises, group collaborative work, small group discussions, and brainstorming. Projects make learning more interesting to the students and present the learner with broader feedback. When finished with projects many students feel a sense of accomplishment.

5. Collaborative Learning
Collaborative learning is when two or more students work together to learn about a subject. I collaborative learning the members are not only responsible for their own learning, but helping other members as well. Using this usually results in building stronger student to student bonds. It also tends to encourage cognitive development and heighten self-esteem.

2) Describe how they are used in the course.

1. Discussions are used in this course weekly. Every time we post and respond to a discussion question, we are using asynchronous discussion. Even though students in this course do not necessarily live in the same time zone, we are still able to discuss and explore each other’s unique perspectives.
2. This course promotes self-directed learning as any online class would. Aside from the videos our professor posts, it is up to us as students to review the book and research on our own to teach ourselves the material necessary to be successful in this
