This interview was conducted on November 8, 2017. I interviewed Bridget Lahart at Medinah Primary School. I chose to interview her because she is the only special education teacher in this building in the district. Medinah Primary School is a preschool-2nd grade school. Bridget’s position is a Special Education teacher, she can be/has had contained classrooms or used as more of a resource. She strives to have a more of inclusive approach to special education. She writes IEP’s for this school as well as directs Rti for the school.
Throughout the interview, I found that Bridget really strives for students to be in an inclusive classroom as much as possible. She has had, in the past, fully special education classrooms where she is in the classroom with a student or two all day. This year, she does not have an students that need full time special education needs so she spends most of her time working to make sure students in the inclusive classrooms needs are being met. The organization is set up so that the students are constantly moving. The tables are empty, allowing the students to move around when they need a pencil, paper or any other materials for the lesson. She has different forms of seating such as crates, stools, fun chairs and lap desks to accommodate the students needs for the day. I also found it interesting that she stated that she has all different types of writing utensils for the students. The students have options to use different size pencils, to cater to their needs and preferences. According to the text, “Physical arrangement can affect student learning and behavior in a number of areas”. I think that this relates to how this classroom is set up, it allows the students to be constantly moving and keep their focus on their school work, because their minds are constantly getting
