Job description:
Stage managers coordinate all of the aspects for the company, ensuring the successful delivery of the performance. They will be managing technicians, rehearsals, actors, props and also costume fittings in partnership with house staff and the director. Depending on the size of the productions you may have a deputy manager and an assistant manager; however you may be working on your own. A typical day to day work activity could consist of:
• Setting/running up rehearsals
• Arranging costumes
• Making alterations to the set in-between scene changes, running backstage and onstage during performances.
• Calling actors for rehearsals or performances
• Distributing information to certain theatre departments

For example, if someone on stage had a problem you would need the communication skills to help out in that sort of situation whether it’s your role to help or may be someone else you can pass that message through or do something about it. Another essential skill would be flexibility, if you’re working within a theatre you need to put 100% effort into the time that you work, activities or rehearsals can be very repetitive however you will need to be able to work flexible hours for everyone’s sake. Teamwork is also a big part in the stage management role but also in theatre as a whole, you will need the temperament to get along with people in the technical and artistic sides of the theatre itself. Therefore you will need to be friendly and patient.
