As a future educator, I feel as if a standardized test cannot determine what a student is capable of. There are two sides, one that agrees that these tests are doing well for students and school officials, and another that argues that these tests are hurting the students taking them and should be put to a stop. Since the beginning of invention to the innovations of today, creativity and imagination have been imperative in the advancement of human society. However, the institutions that the future of the human race is forced to attend, forcibly removes or cruelly conceals the backbone of advancement from these poor unsuspecting children. From the start, children are forced to conceal their “offbeat and strange” ideas and opinions, take test with absolutely no wriggle-room, and denied the freedom of self-gratification and discovery. Such practices are inhumane and make children no more useful to society, than an empty bowl to the hungry.

Students’ education is harmed due to narrowed curriculums and school closings. With the knowledge gained about standardized tests, many colleges have become “test-optional institutions” (Soares 3). In fact, according the article “Standardized Tests Discriminate Against Minority and Lower Income Students,” Wake Forest University went test-optional in 2009 and today there are over 870 test-optional colleges, representing almost 40 percent of all four-year degree colleges in America (Soares 3).
Standardized testing has become one of the most popular types of testing in U.S. public schools to date. Students take numerous standardized tests throughout their childhood schooling.
