Students attend college to broaden their knowledge in an environment dedicated to education and research. There are hundreds of colleges and universities around the country that provide great programs to strengthen one’s education. Choosing a college is found to be extremely difficult, considering it is the first step of adulthood and forming a career.
Every year thousands of high school students will receive their diplomas and become graduates. For many of us this is a major moment in young adulthood. One of the first major decisions many of us will make following that day will be whether or not to attend college. All through school it is constantly pushed upon us that college is the best way to prepare for a successful future. However, everyone does not feel that way.
I had the opportunity to skip the eighth grade and move right into my freshman year of high school. Throughout my high school career, I have taken as many honors and Advanced Placement courses as possible. In each of these courses, I received high marks in class and on the tests. While attending Florida Atlantic University, I plan to pursue studies in architecture and design. While my ultimate goal is to achieve a Masters in Architecture, I am also a writer and will continue to perfect my craft.
Throughout high school, my opinion on college and how I planned to approach my future changed drastically. As I became more exposed to people other than my family, I learned the importance of an education. As students go through high school, many start thinking about their future after school. Some students choose to get a full-time job after graduation to begin earning money instead of going to college. Some people join the military. For the people who choose to go to college, the closer it gets to senior year, they start deciding which college is the right one for them.

Most schools prepare students for college during middle school and high school, then again some wait until last minute and end up in a huge panic. Certain people are expected to go to college and some make the choice right away and some wait a year. Many go and some choose not to, but when it comes to college, it’s a huge topic in a senior’s life! We have to apply, write papers for scholarships, then cross our fingers and pray to get an acceptance letter or email, and pray we don’t see the words “denied” or “We’re sorry to inform you…”. As I said, not everyone goes to college but my sister decided to go because she wanted a better future for her and her son.
A liberal arts education is the right choice for me because that is where I will find the most opportunities. As I transition from high school, I know that my passions will change. Therefore, the more opportunities a school can give me, the more fine-tuned my interest will become. In addition, I like the small class sizes that liberal arts colleges provide because I feel more comfortable in a setting where I am familiar with all my classmates and the professor knows more about me than my name. Through knowledge of my sister pursuing a liberal arts education I feel like I have a better understanding of what I should expect and what the difference between a liberal arts school and a research institute is.
My future goal is to become a midwife. To prepare for this, I am currently taking two dual credit classes, English and U.S history, I am also in clinic rotations. I am taking these classes because even though they may be difficult at the moment I know they will immensely benefit me later. Apart, from taking dual credit classes I am also working part-time at a restaurant to save up for college. I know that one has to work hard to achieve their goals.

Throughout my second semester I have grown in investigating the world and communicate ideas and grown my knowledge and College Career Readiness as a student. This semester has me stressed more than I have before, so stressed about AP exams and college readiness.
Attending a college or university can be a pleasurable four years or it can be path of frustration and indecision. I have spent the past year at Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences thinking I wanted to be a doctor. College is expensive and when I started pondering changing my major it just didn’t seem practical. As a second semester sophomore changing my major would potentially mean spending more time in school which in return means more student loans and prolong starting a career. Not only would I be changing my major, I will be changing schools completely.
My college experience and performance could be compared to that of a rollercoaster ride. While fresh out of high school, I had a vision of majoring in Chemistry and being accepted into medical school. However, a few early bad grades, a couple semesters off, and an unwilling desire to attend school, have brought me to the position I am currently in. Thankfully, I was able to find my passion in business as I worked in a grocery store. Currently employed as an Assistant Manager, I've been able to learn business ethics hand on and also apply my knowledge from the business classes I've taken to further advance my career.
At the end of my sophomore year of high school, our guidance counselor began her routine speeches on our schedule possibilities for the following year. I began to ask myself, “Where would I be next year?” With many different possibilities on my mind, I decided that enrolling in a college class and becoming a concurrent student would be the most beneficial choice to make. The following year I was introduced to the wonder of discussion posts, online quizzes, and exams that didn’t always match the material I studied. In the midst of everything happening I began to ask a different question, “Why am I spending my time doing this?”
In life, you will encounter many extraordinary individuals that have the potential to open numerous doors of opportunity – if you allow them. Growing up, getting a job, and living a stable life were the kind of talks that were stressed in my immediate household of a single mother of three girls. Although, not as privileged as other individuals that surrounded me in grade school growing up, I have always inquired about my purpose in life – my goals. I made it my mission to find my niche by trying numerous tasks such as tutoring, dancing, singing, and volunteering. Every task I attempted gave me an inside feeling of satisfaction but something was still missing.
Imagine that you have just graduated high school. You are more full of life, enthusiasm, and energy than you have ever been. Your four years of hard work have finally paid off, and now it is time for the next step. According to your parents, teachers, and just about every other authority figure in your life, college is that step. However, what if that did not have to be so?
