Introduction

Strategic planning is the foundation of future innovation and success for an organization. To further understand the concept of strategic planning, as it relates to the nursing profession, a strategic plan review was completed. Specific components of the strategic plan review include a review of strategic planning resources and generation of an annotated bibliography, a case study review and reflection of current practice were completed. The authors cite the five guiding principles of AI that influenced the strategic planning process such as constructionist, positive, anticipatory, poetic, and simultaneity. This article provides a first hand step by step account of an organization utilizing AI in the creation of a strategic plan guided by the four dimension model. The four phases in the four dimensional model are discovery, dream, design, and destiny. In particular, the article focuses on the systemic processes of the phases which utilizes the art of asking positive questions that heighten the system's capacity for a heightened positive potential for collaboration and change for the organization. The overall intent is to identify what the organization already has in place and rework it further to develop goals toward a stronger future. System’s thinking is important to ensure one is seeing beyond the specific area of expertise and considering the other significant roles and events that could affect the plan. Shared governance helps to ensure the best decisions are made with input from key stakeholders and experts to yield the best outcome while optimizing all necessary resources. Clinical and nursing informatics in a healthcare complex adaptive system are integral to practically any decision as the multitude of processes affect nursing care and the documentation of that care in an electronic health record
