Annyeonghaseyo, I am applying to the Gilman Scholarship to contribute to the study abroad program at Winston-Salem State University. I am a freshmen, pre-nursing student at WSSU; I would like further my learning in science in South Korea for the fall semester of 2017. My study abroad experience will be through the ISEP program in which I will switch with a university student in South Korea. The head of the study abroad program persuaded me to choose this program for the semester because he explained how great of an experience it would be. I choose a semester long because I feel a summer long or few weeks there would not be a long enough time for me to get a great understanding of South Korea. For the past months I have been researching what it’s like being a foreigner in South Korea and what experience I could possibly have while I am there. The language barrier would be a kind of a problem at first because I have only learned the basics of the Korean language but being there I would learn more and be able to communicate better. I have always faced challenges in my life and will keep on facing challenges because that is just life, I just have faith that god will get me through those challenges that I will be facing. Receiving the Gilman scholarship would make it possible for me to pay for the study program cost. My trip abroad would be a great example of the opportunities education can give When I told my dad about me wanting to go to South Korea, he said no because of the unknown of what could happen to me while I’m there and him not being close to me if something happens, but I my mother has always told me to not let fear take over because you are just going to be stuck in life. I am nervous just like my dad also but I know if I don’t take a chance then I will never be able move forward in life and I will always have that regret of not going when I had the chance
