Break Out of the Ordinary, and Embrace the Ordinary? While flipping through a magazine, you come across a picture. This picture displays a piece of computer hardware breaking through a concrete wall. Intrigued by such a strange sight, you decide to take a closer look into the advertisement. The advertisement tells the reader that they can avoid being ordinary by investing in the company’s product. The advertisement tells the reader that they will gain good performance from the product while avoiding the high cost of competitor prices. It claims that the product is extraordinary because of the product’s speed, performance, and software. The logical appeal is a “rhetorical strategy that intends to show readers that the argument depends on formal reasoning, including providing evidence and drawing conclusions from premises” (Troyka & Hesse, 2017). The ad’s text seeks to educate the viewer about OCZ’s superior product but fails to provide useful knowledge. The advertisement uses bullet points to list some of the specifications of the product and then explains how the specifications are favorable using a block of text. The bullet points illustrate things like the max speed, the max storage space, the name of the reading device, and the software in the product. The block of text is designed to tell the reader that the company is friendly and that it offers perks like advanced warranty protection and worry-free customer service. Including all of this information is acceptable, but these specifications and bonuses have nothing to do with the actual power and performance of the product.
