Summary: My Experience At Bigelow Middle School Observation

My final observation experience occurred at Bigelow Middle School in Newton. Bigelow Middle School serves grades sixth, seventh, and eighth. Bigelow Middle Schools is a middle school in the Newton Public School district. Newton Public Schools are considered to be in the Greater Boston region of Massachusetts. According to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (2017), 191 students at Bigelow Middle School are considered high needs. Furthermore, 71 students are economically disadvantaged. 63 students are considered English Language Learners. 115 students have reported disabilities. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education reports for the 2016-2017 school year that of the 525 students that 5.9% of the students were African- American, 15% were Asian, 9.7% were Latino, 0.8% were Native American, 61.9% were Caucasian, 6.5% were multiracial, and 0.2% were Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander. Furthermore, for the 2016-2017 school year there were approximately 50 teachers employed at Bigelow Middle School (Bigelow Middle School Profile). Furthermore, by being actively involved in the school, school librarians will be better able to illustrate their role as educators, form relationship, and advocate for the school library program. Therefore, my observation experience at Bigelow Middle School was instrumental in highlighting the importance of being actively involved in the school community. Moreover, I also furthered my understanding of the importance of student feedback to building effective and student-centered school library programs. Thus, my observation at Bigelow Middle School illustrated how I need to incorporate assessment of the school library program from the student perspective while also being actively involved in the school
