Susie O'Brien's article 'It's time to honour gay couples and allow them to marry' (The Advertiser, November 20, 2010, p. 27) is arguing the side of pro-gay marriage in the debate of marriage equality. This argument is made using ethos, logos, pathos and suggestive language as to guide you to her side of the argument. Susie begins by talking about herself and her experience on the subject of whether or not she had a choice when growing up straight or gay. She demonstrates her knowledge on the topic by referencing her personal history; however not truly showing why her opinion should be listening to rather than others. Her argument is very personally based and draws examples such as herself and her family or friends.
Why she decide to write about gay marriage as well as giving readers background to how the issue has affected the world and what people think about it. She challenges people to think more on why they are opposed to gay marriage stating, “Will someone please explain to me how permitting gays and lesbians to marry threatens the institution of marriage? Now that the Massachusetts Supreme Court has declared gay marriage a constitutional right, opponents really have to get their arguments in line” (Pollitt 560). It sets up her main idea of the essay and of each paragraph. Her questions help lead her thoughts into what people have been using as an excuse for opposing gay

In “How Not to Advance Gay Marriage” David Brooks analyzes a situation where a gay couple, Charlie Craig and David Mullins, was denied service for a wedding cake at a bakery, while showing “two possible courses of action, the neighborly and the legal,” to convey the result of each action. While showing pros and cons of both neighborly and legal courses, Brooks juxtaposed between them explaining how “The neighborly course would have been to use this situation as a community-building moment” and how the Legal course “was to take the problem out of the neighborhood and throw it into the court system”. Brooks makes this differential in order to prove to American that they use the legal course of action too much and to show how it is the reason
Same-sex marriages can help add more money to the wedding industry, it can help decrease cost of state benefits, it can add more revenue to the whole state, denying them the right to marry goes against the fourteenth amendment, it would be the right source of action since they face discrimination, denying someone the right to marry means that you are denying them happiness, religious leaders support it because it bring peace in the communities, they support it because they see everyone as God’s children and they support it because, in the bible, the term marriage meant just between two women and the term didn’t regard to gender. Same-sex marriages can very important essence to help boost the economy because it can help during times when a state is going through a crisis like they don’t have a lot of employment. Don’t have funds to improve communities or it can help the entire country fund into healthcare, education and---- which can improve some nay lives. Allowing a ban on same-sex marriage is a bad example towards the next generations of children. It’s teaching them that it’s ok to discriminate certain people.
Sprigg’s viewpoint is that “homosexual relationships are not marriage because they are not between the union of a man and a woman and that homosexual relationships are harmful because they do not provide the same benefits to society as heterosexual marriages, but their consequences are far more negative than positive” (Finsterbusch, 2012, p.124). Sprigg’s comments are supported by figures on higher rates of diseases, higher rates of mental health issues, and national opinion polls that say people do not support gay marriage. He has some valid points and does have his opinion about the subject. However, when it comes to same-sex marriages I am divided on this subject for different reasons. First, I think we should not judge people or what
Bronski states that “Much of the discussion about same-sex marriage concerns deeper economic and social-justice
Steve Seidman's "Gay Marriage" explores the relationship between gender roles and political rights, particularly by explaining the gay marraige movement. Seidman argues that the fight for gay marriage is not just about overall acknowledgment of same-sex relationships but also about the changing social dynamics of marriage and the deemed threats to traditional gender roles and power structures within it. This opposition originates from those traditional and typical ideas of marriage which
However, many people dislike and have various reasons why they are against same sex-marriages. Growing up I was always taught that homosexuality is immoral and marriage consist of a man and a women. Equality has been a big issue and not only in marital status. The speech, “Obama’s Remarks on Supreme Court Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage,” uses rhetorical devices to persuade the LGBT Community on the effectiveness that Equality is beginning in America. Every speech has a message that persuades the audience to understand what the orator is talking about. In this particular speech President Obama’s message is based on equality.
Solnit believes that the advantages of marriage equality far outweigh the drawbacks. Same-sex marriage only brings benefits to couples, not harm the nature of marriage. If gay men and lesbians get married, the rate of domestic abuse will reduce as the two partners are equal in role. Personally, I am more on Solnit’s side because I think heterosexuality is not the only ideal concept of a marriage. Marriage should be deiced based on love and responsibilities.
In its quest to increase same sex marriage, America is going state by state to provide pros and cons to those who are against gay marriages. While many disagree with the new laws and trends being brought to the plate, supporters ask why? By examining the economic growth, the benefits, and the right of the American people it is evident there is more good than bad coming from the legalization of gay marriage. As Americans we take pride in our freedoms, and the idea of the American dream. However, currently here in America we are denying freedoms to many of our citizens.
Same-sex marriage (also known as gay marriage) is a controversial topic that is constantly appearing in headlines of the news. It seems that more and more states are pushing to legalize gay marriage every day. Wyoming, a typically more conservative area, was the 32nd state to legalize gay marriage back in October. Although there seems to be increasing support for gay rights, the right for same-sex couples to marry continues to spark debate. Gay marriage is a universal issue, and debates continue to arise over whether same-sex couples should be granted marriage equality, be granted civil unions as a replacement, or denied theses rights altogether.
Being gay does not make somebody any lesser of a person, it does not change the fact that they are a human being. Andrew Sullivan stated that he does not see a reason why every citizen should not be treated the same way, he said that he saw many good reasons why a whole group of citizens should not be denied marriage rights (Wolff 191). The act of gay marriage is fair because if other heterosexual couples exhibit all of the same characteristics and components as one who is gay than they are not different. Heterosexuals do not love all of the same people, not all men and women look the same, there is a variation of people in the world. Like people who are gay, they do not love all of the same people along with heterosexuals; the only difference is that they find the same sex attractive instead of the opposite sex.
