How the content in Chapter 9 may impact how I write/revise my literacy narrative. Chapter 9 deals with methods of analyzing strategies for writing. This chapter entails the benchmarks on how to properly write Introductions, Body paragraphs and Conclusion. Reading this chapter has made me more knowledgeable about these crucial steps. The brilliant information I have aquired from this reading will be used in my revision for my literacy narrative.
1. What are the turning points in the narrative? What are the most important things the writer seems to learn? The first turning point in the narrative is when Mr. Richard Rodriguez is in second grade.
There are eight points that are important on chapter 8. Such as, Literacy begins; play, language, and literate behavior: A natural partnership; fostering literate behaviors; Honoring the importance of literate behaviors; languages and literacy learning in the primary grades: The motivation power; Dynamic approaches to promoting literacy through play. The narratives are easy to write.
The central focus of this learning segment is summarizing an informational text. The essential literacy strategy students will be learning and utilizing with the central focus is determining the main ideas and supporting details of an informational text. This strategy is aligned throughout the learning segment with the standard CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.2: Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text. Chapters one through three in Content Area Reading and Literacy and Do I Really have to Teach Reading details the concept that every teacher is a reading teacher. These chapters outline the importance of assisting students in making connections and becoming active independent readers, by linking content to the lives of each student. Thoughtful planning and creating a safe, supportive environment for a diverse population of readers, including gifted and struggling readers, was also presented throughout the reading. As I read through the chapters I found myself reflecting on my time in the classroom as a student teacher thus far, and connecting my own experiences with the text. Entering into a math, science, and social studies classroom, in
Robert Steveson once wrote, “In each two natures are at war - good and evil”, highlighting the struggle between good and evil within people. In the short novel In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Mr. Utterson, a lawyer, tries to unravel a mystery of occurrences and connections between a murderous criminal and a renowned doctor. As the story progresses, the complicated relationship between the doctor and the criminal is revealed and exposes the duality of the doctor. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson emphasizes the duality of man through contrasting emotions of virtue and evil causing internal conflict. In Chapter 3, one can balance good and evil, but oftentimes, one tends to lean toward one side rather than another.
E.D. Hirsch begins chapter one with the decline of literacy within the classroom. Early in the chapter he makes a statement that “in the United States only two-thirds of our citizens are literate” (Hirsch, p. 2). He continues to state that “even among those the average level is too low.” The chapter further discusses how cultural literacy has declined to a point that many students weren’t as familiar with basic knowledge. Many students in America were not adequately meeting the same standards that students in other countries were surpassing.
This assignment was one of the hardest paper we had to do in our quarter because, we had complete freedom on how we wanted to develop our topic. During the peer review I found out that I had done the assignment wrong and didn 't have a clear idea of what I wanted to project in my paper. I took a moment to decide what I wanted to say and started to change and remove sentences that weren 't necessary. On my first draft of my Literacy Narrative I made negative statements about my writing, which wasn 't the purpose of the assignment. After some time, I finally decided to write about my growth in writing and how I found another outlet for my creativity and where I consider myself to be good at.
There needs to be change made for students to excel. The new standards are expecting students to analyze books with higher expectations for processing their thoughts. It also allows “students to explore and pursue their interests within a broad array of informational texts,” which encourages students to realize there is more to reading than just fiction (CITE-ASCD). Therefore, this can only be an improvement on the old process of reading in schools.
Chapter 8 is about comprehension assessment, the most important goal at end of the reading process. In this chapter it mentions two reasons for assessing comprehension, to gauge a student’s comprehension and to gather an estimate of their proficiency in reading. Approaching a comprehension assessment can be tricky, with the right type of questions teachers can focus on facts, conclusions and how the child has processed the reading section. Some of the questions are literal-students can recall specific information, inferential-students must use logic to answer and critical- student can form a judgement on the section.
My adventure to world of literacy Literacy is the ability to do something and do it well…making extraordinary difference and flourishing lives. Literacy has a much broader meanings than just the ability of a person to read and write. Literacy doesn’t even necessarily require the ability to read and write. To me literacy is the ability of a person not only to read and write, but also being able to understand, perceive the value of the information and put it into use. Ones’s caliber of literacy determines Personal and economic freedoms.
With fear mongering articles like Petri’s, the purpose has been missed. Common Core recommends fiction and nonfiction literature across multiple genres that pique the interest of even lackluster readers. In doing so, this will better prepare the upcoming generation for college or the job market. Ultimately, the technical material does not replace the English Literature selections. The texts recommended are beneficial to students and teachers alike, therefore, improvements in scores previously mentioned are expected to rise as expectations for students are also
The language and literacy assessment that my school uses is known as “Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening” (PALS) (“Pals,” 2007). PALS is a formal assessment that is done several times throughout the school year. The first time this assessment is conducted, it provides teachers information about the students’ “knowledge of literacy fundamentals” (“Pals,” 2007). The second time it is preformed, it is to let the teacher check for student progress. This assessment is used to determine a students’ reading and literacy level.
My relationship with literacy has been a journey all on its own. From learning how to sound out letters and words, to reading my first sentence , I have developed quite a valuable foundation and platform, that will eventually guide me to success. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a love that just continues to blossom. A love that will never fail, nor will I fail it. This love that I speak of is my passion for reading, writing and literacy as a whole.
For me, literacy has always been a problem to this day I am still learning how to speak, and write using proper literacy. Literacy is not just reading and writing, anyone can do that but the ability to understand such things, to comprehend them that is, true literacy. My development for literacy has always been a struggle as I have spoken about before. I had a speak impediment when I was younger which used me to go into different classes which took me away from formal English classes.
