In her essay “The Home: Rancho Santa Fe and Suburban Style,” Phoebe Kropp discusses the emergence of the Spanish colonial style in Southern California. This architectural style became the signature style of this region as many communities began to build that architecture. Kropp uses the San Diego community of Rancho Santa Fe to argue how this style has been taken advantage of by Anglo American’s as they have used it in their modern communities. Kropp addresses that while these communities have adapted the Spanish colonial architectural style they have also created a discriminatory community where not all of the Spanish history and culture are being included and welcomed.
My historical novel is titled Sunrise over Fallujah. The Author 's name is Walter Dean Myers. This book is a sequel to his earlier book Fallen Angels. The book I have chosen to review is Boy 21, a fictional read that is written by Matthew Quick. Quick is a New York Times best-selling author debuting in novels such as The Silver Linings Playbook and Love May Fail. To best describe this book, it is a captivating read that is comforting for the mind, as it canvasses the raw and unflinching life of a high school senior who displays love for basketball and life relationships. Furthermore, set in a troubled Belmont city of Philadelphia, Quick incorporates the presence of mobs and violence which is captivating towards the reader and audience. I was intrigued about how the novel was written through Finley the main protagonist, which was Quick’s childhood perspective of life in Philadelphia and his passion towards basketball.

Why did you select this novel? The name of my novel is Half Brother and it is written by Kenneth Oppel, the governor General’s Award-winning author of the Airborn series and the Silverwing Saga series. I had chosen this novel because my friend suggested it to me and said that it was a really good book to read. Another reason why I chose Half Brother as the book that I would use for novel study is because I have read the Airborn series before and Half Brother is written by the same author.
I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.
