Teaching Philosophy Statement

I believe teaching is a continuation of the learning process. As a teacher, I see myself as a student who has passed through the hardest part of acquiring new knowledge and mastered the concepts, and I am ready to pass the knowledge to the students who are going through the process. In this process, my responsibility is to help them get through the difficulties and build their confidence in the subject I am teaching. I am also responsible for helping them connect things in class to the real world.
My unique college background in both engineering school and music school gives me a very distinct understanding of what an ideal teacher should be. From my engineering professors I learn that good teachers care about students and provides freedom for their pursuit of knowledge and innovation. They can be so approachable and dress just like another student without sacrificing their authority because of their knowledge and ability to mentor. I believe that a good teacher should be able to understand students’ difficulties in learning new materials and address the issues in an understandable manner. To be able to achieve this goal, I make sure that I understand the course materials thoroughly. I would find out potential misconceptions students might have and highlight them in class. Allowing students to discuss in class, as well as evaluating students’ assignment and address common errors found in their work would also help me find out their strengths, so that I could reinforce the peer-learning environment.
