Educating is one of the most important careers someone can ever have. Some way shape or form as an educator you can impact the lives of students you teach. As I grew up I always wanted to be a teacher. I strongly believe in educating the youth. Day in and day out I think about ways to create fun lessons so students can learn. Teaching social studies is somewhat difficult at times. Not only do I have to focus on teaching content but also teaching a skill. As I started teaching at East Brooklyn Community High School I realize students struggle to read, write and comprehend the text given. I often ask myself “Why do so many of our students struggle with reading and what can we do about it?” Why do so many of our students struggle with reading? What can I, as a secondary teacher do about it? How can I create a lesson plan for teaching using reading strategies? Although I follow The Common Core Curriculum and NY State Content Standards for Social Studies, they do not teach or explain to us as educators how to apply it in the classroom, yet how to apply it in an urban classroom.
