Schedules and routines are significant for student learning. Providing consistency in the classroom helps students feel secure. In my classroom, the daily schedules are created using colored laminated index cards. Each morning the head teacher will set up the daily schedule including both the time and activity. The schedule is placed at the eye level of the students and is color coordinated by student. This form of schedule allows for students to prepare for what’s coming next. Each student has a different schedule. For example, one student has all of the subjects and speech, where as another student only has Language Arts, Math and Occupational Therapy. As a class, students practice their handwriting skills. Students arrange their chairs in a circle and warm up by writing letters on dry erase boards. Then, students move to the front table and write words using paper and pencils. Learning materials, such as pencil grips and writing boards are used to accommodate certain students with their writing. As the morning comes to an end, the teacher lets the class play for the last twenty minutes before lunchtime. In my classroom, play with peers and adults is a vital part of the educational setting. This is a theory developed by theorist Lev Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development. Vygotsky believed that “while children need their peers to grow, they need adult interaction as they master each social skill” (cite). During this time of play, the students can choose to play alone, with their classmates, or with the teacher. In my classroom, clean up time is both a regular and fun routine that teaches students how to be independent and take responsibility. This is a theory from Maria Montessori. Montessori believed that we should “never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed” (cite). Throughout the day, students follow a clean up procedure. After every activity is completed, the teacher will sing a clean up song to prompt that it is time for the students to clean up the classroom. To prevent any disruptions from arising, we follow a proactive approach. Being prepared is a crucial part of this approach. I believe that preparation helps students stay focused and reduces risk of disruptions. Quite often the teacher incorporates technology into the lessons. I believe technology is beneficial for our students with special needs. Technology in the classroom assists students with using their strengths to work around their challenges, yet can also be quite distracting to other students. I would change the amount of technology used within our classroom to prevent less distractions during instructional
