Brayden Groff Mr. Androconis American History, Block 3 October 5, 2016 Weaponry and Technological Advancements During WWI During World War One enemies presented countless obstacles and challenges for both sides of the war. The end of the war was always on everyone mind. Thousands of soldiers were being slaughtered during trench warfare along with many civilians, at home and on passenger ships. In order to overcome these obstacles and end the war, both sides worked on advancements to all of their weaponry and found new technological advancements. These advancements lead to the development and evolution of aircraft, tanks, warships, and artillery, changing the weapons used in war forever.
WW1 was the first industrial war, as it was marked by the new weapons and military technology introduced to aid in fighting. As the level of fighting increased, military technology advanced throughout the war. Machine guns, planes, tanks, and artillery were some of the most used and advanced weapons. Most of the machine guns at the start of the war were heavy and needed a team of soldiers to operate it. This shows how when they were first used, they weren’t very well developed as it was new, primitive technology, and were mostly used as defensive weapons due to their immobility.
New technology made WWI significantly different from earlier wars since there were new and more powerful weapons, allowing them to kill more people and damage a country more. Other previous wars used insufficient guns where you had to get very close up and could not damage you a lot. Rifles and cannons were revolutionary to this war since without them they most likely would not have been nearly as many deaths—on both sides—than if the soldiers were still using early futile weapons. 2. The decline of the Ottoman Empire began in the mid-18th century when Enlightenment ideas were educated to people and enslaved people or hard laborers began to think about freedom.
Technological developments including machine guns, tanks and flamethrowers had a significant impact on the Western Front during World War I (WWI). These played a fundamental role in the advancement of The Triple Alliance and Triple Entente on the Western Front. The use of these weapons by both forces were vital in attempting to break the stalemate and aid in trench warfare. The use of machine guns by Germany during The Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916 - 18 November 1916) had a significant impact on the Triple Entente and sophisticated the British troops. The weapon was vitally important as it caused mass casualties due to its extremely quick fire rate of 450-600 rounds per minute that resulted in over 60,000 deaths on the first day of conflict.
Along with its global scale, World War I introduced the use of industrial technology that revolutionized the way war
New Technology made WW1 different from previous conflicts because of what was changed about the technology, what was the effect of changing it, who decided to change it and when it was decided to be changed. Technology in WW1 was associated around industrialism and mass production. It was greatly associated around industrialism as lots of the weaponry was very bulky and large meaning that mass production was also used a lot to make many tanks, guns and weapons to use. A couple pieces of weaponry that was made for WW1 was tanks, poison gas, flamethrowers, interrupter gear etc. There were also things that were less lethal such as sanitary napkins which was also created for WW1 nurses.
How WW1 weapons changed the world of warfare “European nations began World War I with a glamorous vision of war, only to be psychologically shattered by the realities of the trenches. The experience changed the way people referred to the glamour of battle; they treated it no longer as a positive quality but as a dangerous illusion,” Virginia Postrel. WW1 was the first war to truly tear away from the fantasy of battle, and replaced it with the brutal reality of widespread death. Weapons, and upgrades to existing weapons, introduced in WW1 forever changed modern warfare. World War 1 introduced and upgraded many staples of modern anti personal weapons.
Warfare changed significantly from World War I to World War II. One of the most notable changes was the use of technology and weaponry on the battlefield.
