How Technology affects bullying
Bullying has been an issue for decades but now, due to technological advancements, the problem has become immense with catastrophic results. Cyberbullying, is bullying using technology and social media. Due to the advancements of cell phones and apps, cyberbullying is gaining more and more popularity. Due to the lack of confrontation with cyberbullying people are more likely to bully online than face-to-face. Cyber-bullying is more than just saying some mean words, harassing, impersonating, outing, excluding, and stalking are all ways that people bully online. It can have devastating effects as demonstrated by the suicide of Megan Meier as a result of cyberbullying over MySpace.
Megan’s fake boyfriend that broke up with her was actually the mom of one of her classmates who told Megan the “world would be a better place without” her. Around 15% of teenagers who have sent or posted nude or seminude images of themselves on social media or through instant messaging, report that they have done so to someone they only know online ("Cyberbullying."). However, 48% of teenagers say they have received this type of message. During the study 36% of teen girls and 39% of teen boys said it is common for nude or semi-nude photos to be shared with people other than the intended recipient.
