Teflon Personal Statement

My interest in veterinary medicine began when I was a child; my parents gave me the privilege to own different types of pets. One of my pets that stood out were my two birds. I was excited when I first received them because of the new responsibility, but unfortunately both of them mysteriously passed away. It was a devastating event, but it led me to wonder what went wrong. I did some research and the cause was Teflon poisoning. Due to limited knowledge of a bird’s physiology, it was unexpected that the fumes from an overheated Teflon pot can be toxic to birds. Since then, my curiosity for animals and their physiology have grown.
However, during my undergraduate career, I stumbled upon some doubts. I was uncertain about pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine. During my third semester, I got discouraged by the grades I received. At the time, I was thinking about quitting school, and getting a full-time job to help out my parents. My parents did not allow it; they wanted me to focus on my studies. They even suggested the idea of changing my major, but I couldn’t see myself majoring in anything else. I would love to teach people about their furry loved ones and about the animals they encounter. Teaching people about animal welfare is something I enjoy and I am comfortable with. As a contributing Latina in my community, my goal is to remain consistent as a role model to others who have faced similar challenges as myself, such as financial and cultural difficulties. Thus, having to overcome these difficulties in exchange, I have realized my responsibility to encourage other minorities to find their academic purpose by offering my guidance.
