Texas A & M University Student Safety Proposal

1289 Words6 Pages

Purpose
The purpose of this proposal is to suggest possible ideas to promote student safety off- campus at Texas A&M University.
Summary
While the Corps of Cadets “Corps Escorts” Program is helpful to many, it is limited by the fact that it has an on-campus only policy. About 75 % of students live off campus, many of them being female. With Northgate, Texas A&M’s party scene, just behind campus, many girls do not feel safe walking around that area at night. A proposal should be made to not only extend the Corps Escorts ability to leave campus, but also a program should be instituted in order to help Aggies practice safety both on and off campus.

Mandatory meeting for all incoming freshmen who are living off-campus in order to make them aware of the dangers of living off campus and give them ways to promote safety.

Introduction
Texas A&M University currently has several systems and services in place to promote student safety while on campus. These include but are not limited to: the Emergency “blue light” phone stations, Code Maroon, and Corps Escorts. These systems do help prevent some crime, but are geared specifically towards students who are on campus. According to Student Life at Texas A&M, over 38,000 students live off campus. The services in place are not effective measures to promote their safety.
I propose a plan that focuses on improving personal safety off campus. I intend to do this by increasing the amount of times the off-campus buses run at night for students to use to get off campus safely. This will increase the amount of safe activity on campus after dark and encourage students not to walk alone. I will also post signs that will inform students of safe practices to use on campus at night, and we will enlist surrounding student communities to form a Neighborhood Watch program.
