The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).

Well, in the short story, “Thank You Ma’am,” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, the protagonist, does just that. She has a very complicated personality because she is hostile, but still lonely and caring. A big indication that Mrs. Jone hostile is, after, a boy made an attempt to steal her purse and failed, he fell.
A central theme in the short story “Thank you Ma 'am” by Langston Hughes is a little kindness goes a long way. One act of kindness can change a person’s life forever. Her unnecessary kindness made a major impact on Roger and changes him. As the story progresses, we see that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones shows empathy and kindness for Roger. That kindness appears to pass onto Roger near the end of the story.

In the story, Roger tries to steal a woman's purse but failed and the woman took him back to her house to clean his face off and ended up cooking dinner for him and taught him lessons for in the future and then let him go. The story, “Thank you Ma’am”. The author, Langston Hughes, presents the theme that if poor, people think that it's right to steal. Langston Hughes uses parts of dialogue, parts of actions, and parts of thoughts in the story to create the theme.
On "Thank you Ma'am" by Langston Hughes, the robber name Roger (who were just a teenager) was trying to steal Mrs. Jones' large purse. If Mrs. Jones ignored him and just called the police then the Roger would go jail and would live the way that doesn't look good. But Mrs. Jones didn't ignored the Roger and didn't called the police, she took him to her apartment and she feeded him and she talked to him just like an normal guest even though he was a robber, so this is the action of the brother's keeper. By her kindness the Roger's hunger was gritified would got some hope, and maybe by that kindness Roger's live would changed.
The Lesson He Learned In the short story "Thank You Ma'am" Langston Hughes characterizes Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones as a bossy, empathetic, and thoughtful woman. Mrs.Luella Bates Washington Jones was very bossy when she made Roger do things like wash up his face so he wasn't dirty anymore. But, in a way she was a little empathetic herself.
