The Ares 3 Crew in The Martian plays a crucial role in the story. The commander on the mission, Melissa Lewis, led her crew through all the tough challenges nd obstacles with the fortitude of an undying commander. Her leadership skills, specifically her faith and commitment to the crew, helped to make the journey successful. She stuck with them through everything and risked her life multiple times for her crewmates. An example of her commitment to the team was when Watney was hit during the immense dust storm. She ordered the whole crew to get in the spacecraft to stay safe while she continued to search for Watney. She risked her own life to try to save another friend's life. She was devastated that she had left one of her crewmates behind. We could interpret her feelings as that she would have wanted to be the one to make a sacrifice. Although she couldnʻt control it, she still wished that she could be the one to be in the worse position, not Watney. She also was extremely excited at the fact that she could save Watney. When the Rich Purnell Maneuver was introduced, she jumped at the idea of adding extra days to the mission. She did fairly introduce and explain the risks of the maneuver to the rest of the crew, and they still were excited to save him. Her words may have seemed a little discouraging, but as said in the book, she really was sure that the crew would decide to save him. During the remainder of the mission, Johanssen and Beck had a relationship. They were always trying to keep it away from Lewis; they were afraid of what she would do about it. When she found out, she professionally confronted them without overreacting. She told them that as long as their relationship wouldnʻt get in the way of the mission. She even embraced the relationship and used it to the crewʻs advantage by having them sleep together to make room for another
