Are school meals really that unhealthy? Why do so many people want healthier school lunches? Although many students don’t believe that the school lunches are unhealthy, schools should try to make every effort to increase the amount of healthy foods and to decrease the amount of junk food being sold because healthy foods are more nutritious and energy-rich so students can stay focused in class. In addition, much of the American population is obese and the rate of obesity is growing. And finally, junk food leads to other physical and emotional problems.
One reason why schools should cut down on junk food and add healthier alternatives is because healthy foods are more nutritious and are filled with energy to keep kids focused in class. “To establish a link between diet and academic performance, University of Alberta (Canada) researchers evaluated the lifestyle and performance of some 5,000 children. Students who ate an adequate amount of fruit, vegetables, protein and fiber, with less calorie intake from fat, did better on their literacy tests than those eating foods high in salt and saturated fat,” according to The Chicago Tribune. Clearly, this means that adding healthier choices to food being served at school can help improve the academic performance of students by providing them with more energy to stay focused in class.
