The Controversy Over Genetically Modified Food

The controversy over genetically modified foods is a never ending cycle. The problem with this controversy is that many people know little about genetically modified foods and base their opinions on only the little that they hear. Genetically modified foods are foods that have been altered genetically by placing genes in them or by mutation (Salmon, 2015). An example that can be compared to genetic modification of food is the genetic modification of dinosaurs like the movie Jurassic World. In the movie scientists genetically modify dinosaurs and create hybrids. Hybrids contain DNA that has been modified by using genes of other animals to make up one animal. Unlike dinosaurs that are used for entertainment, food is genetically modified for many reasons. Given facts and statistics a person should make up their own mind regarding genetically modified foods and whether they are in favor or against the use of them. …show more content…

The process which was done before advanced science was cross fertilization. Cross fertilization is where famers would choose positive traits of a plant and breed them with another species that had positive traits (Cantoria, 2014). This type of genetic modification took a long time for plants to contain only positive traits. Now science is used to insert genes into plants so that traits associated with the gene can be present (Kunkel, 2004). Genetically modified (GM) foods are found in many food people eat today. Many people are unaware that their food contains any genetic modification since no labels are required. Labels are not required because it is believed that people would interpret GM foods to be dangerous (Kunkel, 2004). Some foods that are genetically modified are corn, soy and canola
