The Creation of Israel
Palestine is a significant piece of land due to it being the home of Jerusalem, ‘The Holy Land’ which has importance to Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Due to the significance, this of piece land held, a conflict began to arise between Jewish settlers and the British administration while the majority of the Arab population watched on, waiting for the outcome. Unfortunately, their political and territorial right were soon to be limited because of a decision made by the United Nations, to use some land of Palestine to turn create a homeland for the Jews. The creation of Israel is a key event of the 20th century as it brought along many conflicts that helped shape and change how Israel is viewed today through the political relationships it formed with other states and nations.
After the defeat of the Six-Day War, the same year a conference was held between the Arab leaders in Khartoum (Sudan) declaring that Israel would not be recognized, ”…with the adoption of the famous three noes of Khartoum: no recognition, no negotiation, and no peace with Israel." (ADL: Creation of Israel, n.d.). Egypt, however, eventually negotiated and made peace with Israel at Camp David in America forming what we now know as the Camp David Peace Treaty. The treaty led to the withdrawal of Israelis from Sinai as requested by Egypt and Egypt officially became the first Arab state to officially recognise Israel. Furthermore, Israel signed a peace treaty with Jordan as well in 1994, a year after the Oslo Accords. This marked a new phase in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
