Today in education there are many issues that are facing educators and our educational system. The five big problems in education facing us as educators today that I chose were school funding, testing, standards in education, project based learning in schools, and teacher performance.
In education a common problem that all schools face is school funding or lack there of. Because of budget cuts, schools are cutting back in teacher positions, which is causing an increase in the student to teacher ratio in classrooms. On our campus we are feeling the effects of the budget cuts. We are seeing increased class sizes, extracurricular activities being down sized, and instructional support staff being eliminated. Standardized testing sends the message that one size fits all and we all know that is not the case. In our classrooms we encourage teachers to differentiate their instruction for students, but we force students to take a standardized testing. Testing forces to memorize information for the test where they are not capable of applying it in real life. We have seen students on our campus who have been successful because of differentiation in classrooms, but are unsuccessful on tests because of the standardization. So do we base a students’ success on one test? How accurate is this data? The standards in education are also a problem that educators face. There are too many standards for teachers to teach, so instead of going deeper with learning, teachers are just skimming the surface. In Texas we are in the second year with our new math standards and we are seeing this problem on a daily basis. In order to teach to the level of rigor needed by each SE, there needs to be more time devoted to each SE, but because there are so many often times teachers do not reach the level necessary for students to master the SE.
