The Giver in the form of a book differed greatly from the movie, especially with the plot. There were many instances when the plot of the book changed significantly and affected the overall story. The differences in the assignments for jobs, the relationship between Jonas and Fiona, and The Giver and Jonas’ plan to release the memories to the community were three plot changes that stood out immensely. The differences in the plot changed the overall story and made the audience view the story differently. In both the movie and book, citizens are assigned their assignments, or jobs, but at different ages and with different assignments. In the book, the assignments are given at the ceremony of 12. In the book, Jonas had always looked at Fiona differently and had stirrings about her. When he shared that to his family unit, he had to start taking pills to get rid of those feelings. In the movie however, it was injections that did that, not pills. Eventually, Jonas realized what the purpose of the pills was and he stopped taking them, but Fiona never did that. The concept of Fiona after that point was gone and she never really returned in the book. On the flip side, Jonas urged Fiona to stop taking the injections in the movie, and she did. She then also felt something for Jonas and they began to like each other in a way they didn’t know was possible. After that, she continued to show up in the movie and in the end, she even helped Jonas escape the community and carry out his plan. There was also a kissing scene before Jonas left, which differed greatly from the book. These changes were made to create a stronger bond between the two characters and pull more emotions from the audience. It creates a rebellion by deciding not to follow the rules of taking injections to remove feelings and experience love. The thought of Fiona then encourages Jonas on his journey to keep going for her. The changes create more feeling and stronger relationships, and or bonds, between
