The Godfather, Schindler’s List, Titanic, Psycho, Forrest Gump, and ET. Some of the greatest films ever made. These films told stories of a mobster’s empire to a tragic love story. A hero in World War 2 to a friendly alien. 6 movies, 6 stories, 6 different worlds all on 1 screen. The art of making movies isn’t just the story they tell is how you see them being told. Can you imagine watching Schindler’s List in color? That’s the production aspect of filmmaking. You can have a great story and the perfect people to play it but if you can’t put it all together that’s all it will ever be a story. That’s what production does, it puts it all together. The whole development of a motion picture’s complexity is based on the latest technological advances. With cameras, sound recording, and editing. Advancements in these areas expand the creative potential of the filmmaker. But, just because the technology we use have become more advanced doesn’t mean that it is necessarily better to use. The highlights of the technological evolution allows filmmakers to do what was not possible with more primitive technology. Filmmakers used photos of the real world with a flipbook technique. The silent era of moving picture shows began and the term “movies” was born. Musicians would be inside the theaters playing music to provide a mood to the moving pictures since they had no sound. The first time sound was sound was captured was in 1899 called “talkies”. The first full length film, The Story of the Kelly Gang, was released in 1900. The birth of filmmaking can be traced back to the basics of animation. Where several images were drawn with subtle differences and displayed at a rapid pace to give the illusion of movement, kind of like a flipbook. At 1908, the first animated film called “Fantasmagorie” which was produced by a Frenchman named Emile Cohl. The short film Steamboat Willie was released in 1928 by Walt Disney. It featured Mickey Mouse and used sound for the first time and was an instant hit. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, also produced by Walt Disney, was the first full-length animated film.
