The Great Commission, recorded in Matthew’s gospel (Matthew 23:16-20), is one of Jesus’ final directives given to the apostles after the crucifixion and resurrection, and before Jesus’ ascension into heaven. Previously, Jesus had told the apostles (John 15:16) that they were the chosen one’s to go and bear fruit (Pentecost, 1981, p. 509). Further, in one of Jesus’ final prayers to the Father, Christ spoke that the apostles were to be sent into the world (John 17:18) for the same purposes as Christ; specifically, to make the Father known (Pentecost, 1981, p. 509). Thus, Jesus’ mandate in the Great Commission brings Jesus’ words recorded in John’s gospel to the forefront of what the Great Commission actually is, discipleship.

The Great Commission is made possible through the authority of Jesus Christ which was conferred to the apostles and is carried on today by all believers through the power of the Holy Spirit (Ryrie, 1999). Thus, the Great Commission requires obedience and submission to the authority and teachings of Jesus (Hull, 2004). Furthermore, the Great Commission and discipleship requires the believer to replicate Jesus Christ’s life and character while instructing others to follow Jesus’ ways (Hull, 2004). Fulfillment of the Great Commission is seen in preaching, teaching, witnessing, and water baptism which is an external sign of faith in Jesus Christ (Pentecost, 1981).
