Students tend to be academically dishonest more often than you think. There has been many studies about cheating and plagiarism in school that students are doing. It’s definitely not a new problem nor a little problem. It’s been happening for a while and according to studies, it’s a big problem. We all wonder why and how students want to cheat and plagiarize. There’s a couple reasons why students feel the need to cheat in school. “Undergraduates say that they need to cheat because of the intense competition to get into graduate school, and land the top jobs” (Willen 56). For example, a student who lifts excerpts from someone else’s paper and then uses them in his/her own published paper has committed copyright infringement. They could be sued by the creator of the work for any financial damages the creator suffered as a result of the infringement. Most cheating in college doesn’t come to this consequence, but it is a possibility and if it is a repeated action happening in college, it could definitely happen to these students. Even if the cheating is the same, the consequences could be different whether it is in school or school or a legal consequence. The risks to cheating honestly is not worth it. It could be not so big of a deal to some people but if you get caught, it could affect your future life like getting a job because it stays on your transcript and you don’t want one little look on a nearby classmates’ paper ruin that. If cheating is both an ethical transgression and evidence of a failure to learn, it harms the academic community as much as it does the individual.
