There is a review of the available literature that provides a large number of examples of authors advocating that plagiarism is a form of academic offense is widespread among students in higher education. Modern technology has made it easy for students to avoid such pitfalls. For example, Owunwanne et. Al. (2010) emphasises that it is very difficult to control cheating due to the availability for students to access technology.

It is not acceptable to ignore it. One of the solutions that plagiarism can be tackled is by formulating a strategy that involves actions at all levels. In particular the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has charged institutions to have “effective mechanisms to deal with breaches of assessment regulations in place and expects to see them carry out fairly and with rigour” (QAA Code of Practice on Assessment, 2000).

(1) In order to reduce the likelihood of plagiarism, it is important to focus on taking prevention action which involves better design of assessment and more thorough support for students. A re-evaluation of assessment strategies can reduce the risk of plagiarism. A method that is suitable to solve this issue is change the assessment format. For example, design assessment tasks around recent or current events, lesser known case studies and local content where there is lesser plagiarised on literature. This assessment design also supported by Culwin & Lancaster (2001) in writing emphasis that use a case studies, which present more difficulties in locating suitable material to plagiarise. Otherwise, lecturer also may ask the students to produce a video that incorporates or exemplifies key theories, rather than write an essay or report. The results are compiled into an “originality report” that indicates the degree of similarity with other documents and provides links to the original source material.
