Generally, when students help out in the community they do it because they care. Currently, at Redondo Union High School, students are not required to maintain a specific number of volunteer hours to graduate. Every now and then administration discusses making volunteer hours a graduation requirement, and whether it would help or hinder the student population. Volunteering in our community should be required because it will allow RUHS students to gain a fresh outlook on life, but this requirement would only be beneficial to students if there was not an unrealistic standard. Most students at our highly praised school strive to be accepted by a four-year university. One of the unspoken essentials to being accepted is that you are well-rounded and have a rigorous schedule. If volunteer hours are already a necessity for some ambitious students, making them a requirement is not the end of the world. This is not true, with the attainable 64-hour minimum, students have nearly 7 months to bestow 8 hours in a semester to help out the world. On an average weekend, students have 24 waking hours to complete their homework, they can definitely spare one or two hours they would have spent mindlessly staring at the TV screen to contribute to society. Students will be proud each time they volunteer because it is scientifically proven that helping others will make you feel better about yourself. Volunteering in something that you truly enjoy will only further ignite your passion and even inspire you with future choices.
