Many people are known for sports like basketball, football, and soccer but not hockey but Wayne Gretzky changed all that. He is remembered for how he played and the practice and effort he put into his team. He has every single medal there is and broke every single record set by hockey star Gordon Howe. Wayne Gretzky is an innovative hockey player who created a new style of hockey, and he made a society for underprivileged youth to teach them how to play the game. Wayne Gretzky was called the greatest hockey player ever to live because he was smart and was a pinpoint passer.
Saul states, “In the spirit of hockey I believed I had found community, a shelter and a heaven from everything bleak and ugly in the world” (Wagamese 90). Thus, hockey serves as an escape route for all the emotional turmoil that Saul has gone through, and he uses the hockey spirit as a tool to facilitate his healing
Eric Walters’ novel, Power Play, illustrates hockey culture in an evolving fashion. Power Play tells the climactic story of Cody, a bold and determined boy struggling with the downfalls that come with advancing in his hockey career. Cody’s prosperity in being drafted to a Junior A team seems to be an incredible blessing for him; He would be in another city, away from his drunk of a father, he would be taking the next step towards his dream, playing in the NHL, the Show, and he would be doing it all with his new Coach that discovered and mentored him and offered to bring him to success, Coach Connors. However, Coach Connors begins to manipulate, repeatedly sexually abuse and threaten Cody, which forces Cody to spiral downwards into deep depression
A community can be a bit difficult to have, but if you find friends, family, and classmates who understand your opinions and feelings, you will have everything you want, need, and need. In a commencement address at Middlebury College, Julia Alvarez claims that “community is vital" to what you want to pursue in life. A community can be vital because there can be more than one voice heard, and inspiration can be positive. An example of this would be BLM and the famous basketball player Shaquille O'Neal. I can concur that Julia Alvarez's claim is valid based on my evidence and personal opinion.
Lacrosse has changed so much over the years, it has gone from a mainly indian tribe sport to “The fastest sport on two feet”(Wikipedia). Lacrosse was brought by the Native American tribes and they started playing lacrosse in the fifteenth century. People like lacrosse because you get to feel athleticism, toughness.hitting and teamwork all felt in sports from football to basketball. The game started to become popular in 1856 when the first lacrosse program which was the MLC (Montreal lacrosse club) appeared.
Here on campus at the University of Alabama I am member of the sorority Delta Zeta where we have our chapter meetings every Monday night from 6:30-7:30pm. I feel that being apart of Delta Zeta has helped me contribute the most to our campus because of how involved I have become through it. For example, I participated in a program called RISE last semester where I would meet with a group of my sisters every Wednesday from 7-8pm and each week we would discuss things like service and how we can give back to our community. At the end of the program we did a service project with a nursing home here in Tuscaloosa and painted with the residence, as well as played bingo with them. This is just one of the many examples of how Delta Zeta has helped
Growing up in Marystown, Newfoundland, and Labrador, has significantly impacted who I am today and my outlook on the future. There have been both positive and negative effects of growing up in this small town, but overall, my experiences here have shaped me into the person I am today, and I have no bad words to say about the place I call home. One of the most positive aspects of growing up in Marystown has been the strong sense of community here. People in this town are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and there is a real sense of camaraderie among the members of our community. This has taught me the importance of being a good neighbour, family member, and friend while contributing to the well-being of those around me.
That’s how I feel when I step onto the ice. Not cause I’m always unhappy, but because I have become one with the game. When I’m on the ice, it’s the most important thing in my life in that moment. Being on the ice, whether it was in a game, a practice, or just playing for fun and working on some skills, gave me a sense of
The Miracle on Ice inspired many players around the country to believe that anything is possible and also introduced them to the sport of hockey. Part of the reason there was such a large increase in hockey participation after the game was because hockey became a national sport, instead of being a “northern sport.” The spread of hockey needed a tipping point, and this moment was it. The game also inspired many people to go on and play hockey including into the high levels, as they wanted a shot to do what that team had done. Hockey in America continued to grow into the southern parts of the country like Arizona, Nevada, and Florida.
During my short life, I have not had many life altering experiences; however, one thing that has changed me for the better is playing hockey. Since I started playing hockey in eighth grade it has been something I have become passionate about for various reasons. One reason is my love for the game in general, and more specifically for playing goalie, the one position that holds the balance of the scoreboard. The second reason is being a part of a team. This is important to me because it gives a strong sense of purpose to the player.
In middle school and high school, almost every club I was in had to do with serving the community. It has always been something I enjoyed doing. I live in Johnstown, a city where many of the families are in poverty. One of my school 's biggest projects was Trojan Family Christmas, which was a charity event sponsored by Kiwanis Club through our Key Club that ensured children within my school district got at least one present. The members of Key Club, which included myself, put together different activities for the children, which included making Christmas ornaments and hot chocolate.
Hockey has made me more responsible because on tournament weekends my team always has team breakfasts, lunches, and sometimes dinners. If I know that I have a team breakfast in the morning I make myself wake up in the morning with enough time to take a shower, and get ready to leave for the game right after we eat. Also it’s made me more responsible and on top of my school work. Now at school I always right down my test dates so I never forget when I have a test.
The community I belong to is the large community of sports fans that can be found in any country in the world. This is a diverse group of people that include every race and age group. This community produces some of the largest social events in the world, such as the World Cup. Being a part of this community allows you to be a part of a special bond of dedicated sports fans that allow you to express your ideas freely. It also gives me an identity more specifically towards my city and the teams I root for all year long.
My community, is my friends; the ones I talk to, the ones that sit at lunch with me. They are my go to, they are the people at Taft who are the closest to me. In our community we like to talk and have fun! We are not the people on Mean Girls who say, “You can’t sit with us!”
The closes to community experience would be playing sports between the ages of 11-14. Although the team wasn’t strong it trained me to be resilient and overcome obstacles put in my way, as well as work as a
