If your civil rights were taken away, would you fight to protect your rights or watch and let your civil rights drift away? Marcus, a main character in the book Little Brother, was near the bay bridge in San Francisco when it was blown up by terrorists. He was blamed for it by the DHS (Department of Homeland Security). Due to the bombing, the city was put under heavy watch by the DHS and everyone was treated as a potential terrorist, especially Marcus. Throughout the book, Marcus fought against the DHS for the rights to privacy of himself and the civilians of San Francisco.
When relating to someone you hold similar characteristics as them or consociate on a physical or emotional level. In the novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” I partially relate to Pheoby Watson who is apart of the community/outsiders. Pheoby Watson is the best friend of the main character Janie after she moves to Maitland/Eatonville. Pheoby is married to Sam Watson and quickly becomes Janie’s confidante due to her being affable. She looks up to Janie for love inspiration even though she is quite beneficent with her own love life.
There Are No Children Here, a biography published in 1991 by Alex Kotlowitz, uses characterization to define Lajoe as a weakhearted, desperate person who wants to provide for her kids. Many would define Lajoe as a kind person who wants the best for her children but doesn’t have the means to provide for them. Overall, the belief is that she is a flawed person, but with the materials provided, she has been the best possible mother she could be. Generally, Lajoe doesn’t try to be a bad mother. As seen in this quote “Lajoe conceded she could be too soft on her children, though she wanted nothing more than to see Lafeyette and Pharoah graduate from high school.
A novel that refers to an ancient China with different traditions and beliefs, uses a common farmer as the main character. The novel The Good Earth written by “Pearl S. Buck” occurs in early China, at a time there were still emperors. Their life styles were different in many varied aspects in comparison to our modern day life. Some examples of this unique culture are: the different women roles, the symbolism of land as power and how wealth affected their traditions.

In The Outsiders, Darry Curtis plays a large role in influencing the gang and shaping their actions and attitudes. The book, The Scorch Trials by James Dashner is the second book to the Maze Runner series. The book is set in a dystopian world where there is a disease called the Flare that turns affected people into “Cranks,” which are people who act similarly to zombies. The Flare doesn’t come into effect immediately, so the people who has the disease slowly turn zombie-like rather than all at once. Scientists called the WICKED, run an experiment that uses kids to see how they react in terrible situations like these and it is the kids’ job to survive the harshness of the world and get to a safe haven. The memoir "All but My Life", tells of Gerda’s life story as she suffered under Nazi rule. It brings a perspective of the horrors the victims of the Holocaust went through and teaches an important lesson. The theme of the work tells how sustaining hope is crucial to survival and is shown when Gerda believed her life would never change in the beginning, when she found hope from her family in the middle, and how she survived through hope online when she had nothing left during the death march. Hope is one of the main reasons Gerda survived, and the evidence is shown throughout the story. Gerda already showed her aspirations and beliefs at the beginning of the story.
The dead and the gone is a novel by Susan Beth Pfeffer, with the theme of young adult science fiction. This story so far talks about a seventeen year old brother named Alex trying to protect his sisters, Briana and Julie without their parents after the world changed into a catastrophic mess ever since after the moon gets closer to the earth. This story was written in a third person point of view, this is great because it gives the reader a different point of view, rather than just getting the first person’s point of view. As a result of the moon getting closer to the earth, their entire city gets blacked out for a few weeks. Alex, as a matured brother, he had to go through a lot of responsibility when his dad was at his granny’s funeral while
In the book, The Pearl, family plays an important role in the story. Family comes in many typers. Coyotito, Kino and Juana's only child, is the only next generation they have. Juana and Kino also aren't completely married yet. Let along, thats personal family.
In the the Pearl there were five murders in total within paragraphs 5 and 6. The first was after he beat up Juana for trying to throw the pearl back into the ocean where it belonged, a tall shadowy figure jumped him to get the pearl but kino was the one with the knife. The next three were of the trackers who’ve been following them out of town, after Kino killed the first man. And the last was Coyotito right after Kino killed the last man when he tried to run away. The first murder in the story shows that he has truly changed into someone totally different, it shows us, the readers, his family will never be the same again.
Mark Twain said, “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time”. Death is inevitable and no matter how hard we try; its presence is never fully forgotten. While examining both Mark Twain and William Cullen Bryant lives, we see that they exceled in their areas of expertise and enjoyed the lemons that were handed to them. They both made many statements about life, of which time cannot deteriorate their importance and value.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action and adventure. Symbols & Objects Crucifix A wounded soldier Cassie comes into contact with has a crucifix that Cassie mistakes for a gun, leading her to kill the man. This Crucifix empowers Cassie to strive forward to what she wants to get—her brother, Sammy.
Everyone has expectations to whether themselves or others, but these mere anticipations can deal humongous damage to the people being expected to achieve a specific objective. Similarly, all mothers and fathers have ambitions for their children, yet they do not know how impacting it can be for their children. Hence, the establishment of unrealistic expectations upon one’s child exercises too much pressure on the child which later on might push the child to a breaking point. Additionally, the desire of the parents that their child succeeds in a particular activity will restain the child’s free will and turn the kid into something similar to a soulless robot. Nonetheless, all these issues combined will lead to numerous arguments which as time
For my English class I read a book called Famous Last Words by Katie Alender that was written in 2014. This fictional book has been acknowledged by the 2014 VOYA perfect ten and 2015 YALSA quick pick for reluctant readers. The title of the book really sparked my interest because it’s a murder mystery and I really enjoy books that has a lot of plot twists. I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys mysteries with a hint of drama in it. Although there were a reasonable amount of characters in the story, there were only four that were important and consistent throughout the book.
