Leadership Philosophy – GMCS Joseph Jones. Introduction: Leadership is the ability to build a cohesive team, effectively train that team, and provide direction towards a common goal. Every person within an organization is essential. It is imperative to set a standard for everyone to support each other. Leaders should lay the foundation for a positive work environment. When giving orders, a leader must keep the orders simple and prioritize accordingly. Listen to the members of their organization and not be afraid to give and receive constructive criticism. Leaders admit when they are wrong and expect others to do the same. Hold members responsible for their actions, regardless of rank or position. Influences: As a young E-6, I was trying to find my leadership style while taking on more duties and responsibilities. At the time, I had a Chief who was supposed to guide me. Instead, this Chief was the opposite of my definition of leadership in every way. This Chief did not think everyone was essential and created a hostile work environment. This initially surprised me because I thought I did an excellent job ensuring we conducted Action Reports after evolution. After reflecting on this, I realize I do not do this in my day-to-day activities, just operations. I need to make a conscious effort to ask for corrective actions on other things besides operations. Another feedback I received that I plan to work on is challenging people to try new and innovative ways to do their work. As a conscientious manager, I am often reluctant to change. I’m often frustrated with new technologies and comfortable with antiquated ways of doing things. I struggle to adapt to change and explore innovative approaches to accomplish tasks effectively. I will challenge my younger shipmates to research, develop, and present a plan to make our daily tasks
