The National Geographic Society (NGS) , founded originally by a diverse group of 33 scientists in 1888 is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations in the world . National geographic provides a mission statement saying it “believes in the power of science, exploration and storytelling to change the world, and its purpose is to inspire, illuminate and teach. The National Geographic works to achieve this goal through sponsoring and funding of scientific research, global outreach programs to teach people about the earth and environment, and through publications of scientific journals and books. The homepage is very visually interactive, by clicking on diffrent picture tiles will lead you to different area’s of the site .On the top right menu there are places to subscribe and donate, with the visual news articles below. Visitors cannot miss the stunning pictures that go with each story on the front page. You can tell each picture is carefully selected to draw the user in. When you first enter the homepage you are greeted by an large banner which says “story of the day”. Some user’s may be encouraged to click on the story to find out more, or keep exploring the rest of the homepage. They really want you to feel connected and engaged through the design of the website. The Website also plays on the emotions of viewers, by including The major stories underneath the menu bar of the website. For example, the website featured “This May be the Oldest Known sign of Life on Earth” as the first article on March 2nd . This Story really adds to the purpose of the site as being a Scientific Journal and attracting people to read more. Some of the Other stories cover topic such as Planet earth and the environment. When visitors read these stories they are more likely to associate National Geographic as an Scientific Organization and grow interested exploring it
