Why Is Yearbook Important To You

As a junior in high-school, I wanted to be part of something that I knew I would feel comfortable in. My previous communities that I was entangled with never really motivated me to continue onto more communities that matched with my character. In other words as I grew older I did not want to reach my peak at such a young age. Fortunately Yearbook offered just this. There were many pros such as learning how to work in a group effectively, understanding and a better listener. However in terms of academic structures I was ill prepared. Still, this community helped shape who I am today. Yearbook required me to work as a team and put things together as a group. Essentially each group was in charge of a few pages. Within those groups each person had a job. To conduct interviews, come up with a layout or take photos. If just one person does not complete the task the page cannot be completed. But we always met deadlines because we enjoyed the whole process. Usually people dread group work due to bad experiences with it. I however had a good experience with working in groups while in Yearbook. We each put in equal effort and for the most part shared the same responsibilities. This was uniquely satisfying to me- that after we created something for people to look at and cherish they gained a sense of what we felt. And what exactly embodied the school. My yearbook class did our best trying to incorporate this into the pages. A layout I worked on displayed flowers, trees, insects, and student 9th-12th grade. We wanted to show how nature is usually changing for the better. That as we grow up we are given opportunities to achieve goals, make memories, etc. Or even having new relationships and style. After completing the page I took the layout for a test to see if people could understand the photos without the words- people did. This to me represented another form of communicating and expression. Now in college I notice that when people are reading biographies of others they are not just interesting in the basics but their individuality; what they have done, where thy have been etc. For me this was a step in understanding people, so when I actually took the time to listen to them I could recognize them as a concrete person rather than a general other. They had a story, experiences, and memories behind them. So when I saw people doing or saying certain things or even what they wore. This was all forms of expression that was being unpacked. I am thankful that yearbook allowed me to see the ways we communicate with
