The Odyssey Project Analysis

The Odyssey project that I would like to design is based on music education. Many kids that are in rural and low-socioeconomic schools don’t get the opportunity to learn about classical music unless they participate in band. Music uses both sides of the brain at once, leading to higher IQ’s and test scores overall. Not only does practicing music improve academics, it also relieves stress, which would also benefit students in today’s world. Through the Odyssey project, I could bring the cultural and cognitive benefits of music to children and teens in rural or low-socioeconomic areas that they would not normally have the opportunity to receive. Children in these communities could receive free lessons ranging from beginners to more expert players. The project would provide the teachers, the facilities, and the supplies needed through patrons, fundraising, and community involvement. Some classes would teach basic notes and reading music. Older students might receive private instruction on an instrument, volunteer their time to teach younger students, or participate in an ensemble that would perform for their communities. One study in Time magazine shows that while listening to music can be great, the students would need to actively engage in music in order to get the full benefits i.e. playing a musical instrument. This is why the students need to be introduced to playing musical instruments.
Therefore, this program would focus on ways to get all kinds of instruments from trumpets to contrabass clarinets in the hands of kids. This project would be dedicated to students whose schools might not have the funds to provide early music development and a decent music program. One of the goals for the project will be engaging the students as much as possible in order for them to enjoy what they are doing. If students are not interested in learning, then the program wouldn’t be successful. Hopefully this will also combat the stigma associated with band programs and get more students interested in music
