Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, otherwise known as ADHD, often have difficulties sitting still, concentrating, and paying attention for long periods of time. In most cases, the individual will display their absent minded behavior and typically along with hyperactive and impulsive nature. Typically, the child will have a combination of either of those, therefore creating a difficult environment for them to succeed at school and can cause problems at home. Throughout elementary school, teachers would always tell my parents I had trouble focusing during class. Although there is significant evidence of damage in daily functioning in individuals with ADHD, there is lots of talk that views ADHD signs as merely a dangerous appearance of normal human behavior (Margaret Austin, 2007). To many, the fact that many individuals show ADHD actions, and knowledge that lots of setbacks create ADHD symptoms and shows that ADHD can’t possibly be a mental illness. On the other hand, people that argue ADHD is a disorder will probably agree that people will differ in skill level with their abilities and apply it to hard material. Problems related to ADHD affects a person's ability to effectively do what they need to do at a given point of time. In different way, individuals consider ADHD symptoms normal because they occur regularly and will therefore consider it non-mental disorder. Based off this fact, we can assume children are getting misdiagnosed because they are the youngest in their classroom and a little immature. I indeed was one of the youngest in the classroom but I don’t believe I was diagnosed with ADHD because I had did have severe symptoms of it. The kids who are the youngest has a much larger chance to be diagnosed with ADHD than the old or more mature kids in the same class. Statistics from this study show the younger boys are diagnosed as much as sixty percent and the younger girls as much as seventy percent (Miller, 2016). It is very important that we ask questions about how kids are actuality being diagnosed, because we need to avoid being wrong with the conduct of children who could be having issues meeting the maturity expectations just because they are undeveloped maturity wise. How should we avoid the misdiagnosis of children? I was diagnosed with ADHD because I struggled to meet certain guidelines and expectations at school, which is the case for most ADHD children. It’s vital that when children are assessed for ADHD, their actions could be related with children similar to their age, but not compared to all the other children in their class.
