Contract farmers make a deal with large companies and are presented with contracts that give information about their income and how the company wants their farms to be running. The company will provide farmers with the birds, food, and set of rules of how they must work with them. Contracted farmers use their land to build chicken houses for the chickens that are supplied by the company. However, the company mandates that the farmers have the chicken homes updated at the chicken company’s requests. If the chicken houses are not upgraded to standard, the supplier stops supplying. Which can ultimately end with putting farmers in debt for the upgrades requested. Any alterations or improvements the companies want in their farms can be made at the companies demand. Big companies like Tyson advertise and label their chickens as “100% Natural Chicken” Most people think that a natural chicken is one …show more content…

These environments that the companies demand are unethical and are not only harmful to these animals but to the farmers as well. The feces piling up and the filthy air they breathe in as they check on the chickens. Most farmers claim that this is not the way they wish to have the animals in these conditions but it is what the companies expect and want these farmers to do. In an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, chicken farmer Craig Watts says, “I would give them, letting in the sunlight and fresh air. Number one, the birds love it, second, it is better for me.” There has been multiple times when requests are made by farmers wanting to make changes to the chicken houses but the companies deny any changes that did not correspond with the way they propose the buildings to be. After a certain time at the farms the chickens are to be taken back to the companies for slaughter and packaging.
