702 Words3 Pages

Designer babies are far from new. “English physician Walter Heape (1855–1929) established the scientific roots of IVF in the late-nineteenth century by transferring embryos from one rabbit to another. The first successful application of IVF in humans occurred almost a century later on July 25, 1978, when Louise Brown was born in Manchester, England. Brown was dubbed the world's first “test-tube baby,” a reference to contemporary IVF's reliance on laboratory fertilization to create viable embryos for implantation. The British physiologist who pioneered IVF in humans, Robert G. Edwards (1925–2013), later won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.”(Lerner, A. W, 2012). Lerner, A. W. of Biotechnology. Detroit: Gale. argues that “Common public perception is that genetic screening and modification of human embryos is used to ensure offspring free of disease and composed of more desirable traits.”(Lerner, 2012). This states that it can be beneficial to use this to prevents disease. However, Bailey, R.claims that “Children, they contend, have a right to an "open future" unburdened by the knowledge of their genetic predispositions for adult onset illnesses.”(Bailey, 2014). Children, they contend, have a right to an "open future" unburdened by the knowledge of their genetic predispositions for adult onset illnesses.”(Bailey, 2014). Bailey is claiming that all children deserve “an open future” and should not be worrying about their genetics. Therefore he’s claiming that pre birth testing is immoral and wrong. In addition, Bailey also says “In the Times article, the Yeshiva University bioethicist David Wasserman argued that discarding the GSS-gene embryos is akin to concluding that people like Amanda Kalinsky should have never been born. But decisions about who should be born ought not to be placed in the hands of ethicists or physicians; they should be left up to the people whose lives and values are actually on the line.”(Bailey, 2014).
